Gondar
Gondar

Ivory’s tour of these ancient kingdoms incorporates Bahar Dar, set in the south-eastern shore of Lake Tana which is the source of the ‘Blue Nile’ and where you visit the Nile Falls and take a cruise.

In Gondar, the ancient capital of Ethiopia from the 17th to the 19th Century, explore some of the city’s dramatic castles and palaces. Labella is the site of the amazing rock-hewn churches built in the 12th century which have withstood the test of time. Also visit the Nakutoleab Monastery at the outskirts of Lalibela before flying over the rugged Simien mountains to Axum, Ethiopia’s most ancient city. The Axumite Empire flourished over 2000 years ago and its rich culture will be evident during the visits to the legendary baths of the Queen Sheba. Axum is perhaps the oldest city in Ethiopia and the holiest for the Orthodox Church.
