Unique by a thousand miles, this group of tiny islands floats just four
degrees south of the equator in the Indian ocean. It is a land of colorful
contrasts; bleached granite rock thrusting up from the sea like the peaks of a
sunken mountain range lie in the shadow of the lush tropical vegetation clinging
to the steep mountain sides. The Seychellois are a dramatic combination of the
descendants of British and French seamen, freed African slaves, Arab traders and
Indian and Chinese merchants. Choices of accommodation range from larger hotels
to intimate guest houses.
Mahe Island: the main island of the Seychelles covers an area of 150
sq km with a mountainous interior and pristine beaches. Visitors will want to
explore the capital Victoria, where adept shoppers can haggle over prices in the
market for anything from tropical fruits and fish, to leather-crafted purses.
Praslin: this island has the unique attraction of the Vallee de Mai
where the protected double coconut (coco de mer) exist in their natural habitat.
La Digue: the main attractions of this idyllic island boardsailing,
fishing as well as cycling. Transport is by oxcart, and accommodation is in the
form of chalets.
Bird Island: for bird lovers who wish to share a small island with a
million sooty terns. |
