At 19,400 feet above sea level, Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and one of the tallest free-standing mountains in the world. The Machame route is longer and less traveled, but picturesque with varied scenery along the route. The first day is spent at the Marangu base hotel rechecking individual kits, meeting companions, and getting to know the guides.

The Kilimanjaro expedition begins with a gradual ascent through the forest before emerging at the main trailhead. From here, hike up steep boulder ridges, trek through moorland and into a gorge before crossing the Barranco valley and climbing the Barranco wall (non technical). Weather permitting, there can be wonderful views of Kibo's southern glaciers.

An attempt for the Uhuru peak (19,400 feet) begins at 01:00 hrs over scree and rock and past the Rebmann Glacier, the objective being to see a fiery sunrise from Gillman's Point (18600ft) and splendid views of the ice cliffs across the crater.
