Wedged between the Kalahari Desert and the coastal lowlands of Mozambique,
Zimbabwe is a captivating land of tall teak woodlands, spectacular granite
outcrops, mysterious ancient civilizations and, seasonally, the greatest
concentration of elephant on the African continent. An area the size of Germany,
representing 12% of the country, is set aside for conservation in a network of
national parks and communally-owned land.
Zimbabwe's northern frontier is formed by the mighty Zambezi River and it is
here that the most impressive wildlife sanctuaries and dramatic landscapes are
to be found. The climate is similar to South Africa with summer rainfalls and
the best game-viewing during the dry season (April to November) when the
vegetation is less dense and the great herds of animals retrace their ancient
tracks to the waterholes and the mighty Zambezi River.
